Profile: Pilar Rocha-Goldberg

Pilar Rocha-Goldberg was born in Bogotá, Colombia, and has lived in North Carolina for the past 20 years. She and her husband moved to the state to work in research at Duke University. Since then, North Carolina has become home. “I love the landscape, the trees, the greenery, and especially the people,” she says.

Pilar wears many hats. As President and CEO of El Centro Hispano, she ensures that the organization stays true to its mission while remaining sustainable and impactful. “I’m in charge of making sure we accomplish our mission, and that the organization is viable,” she explains. Through her leadership, El Centro empowers Latino communities across the state with health, education, economic development, and community support programs.

But Pilar’s work goes beyond the professional. She is also a passionate dancer and founder of Takiri Folclor Latino, a traditional Latin American dance group she created to celebrate and share Latino culture. “It’s a way to live and share our culture, bring others into it, and maintain our roots,” she says. Pilar has been dancing since the age of seven, and since arriving in North Carolina, she has started several dance groups that bring joy, pride, and cultural understanding to audiences across the region.

In both her nonprofit leadership and cultural work, Pilar is focused on building bridges. “I help others understand how diverse we are within our own Latino culture, while also learning about and appreciating the other cultures that make up the fabric of our community.” Her goal is always to help people reach their full potential.

Pilar holds her cultural heritage close. She values the strong sense of family, the diversity of Latin America, and the positivity, joy, and work ethic that define her roots. “We contribute through the work we do in so many trades and jobs,” she says. “We bring dedication, joy, family values, and a deep love for life.”

For those visiting the Lotería exhibit, Pilar shares this: “I’m a very positive person. I love being with people and with family.” Through every part of her life—from the stage to the boardroom—Pilar brings her culture, her passion, and her heart to everything she does.

Pilar Rocha-Goldberg nació en Bogotá, Colombia, y ha vivido en Carolina del Norte durante los últimos 20 años. Pilar desempeña múltiples roles. Como presidenta y directora ejecutiva de El Centro Hispano, es responsable de que la organización cumpla su misión y siga siendo viable y sostenible. “Estoy a cargo de asegurar que logremos nuestra misión y que la organización se mantenga fuerte,” explica. Bajo su liderazgo, El Centro apoya a las comunidades latinas en temas de salud, educación, desarrollo económico y participación comunitaria.

Pero su labor va más allá del ámbito profesional. Pilar también es una apasionada del baile y fundadora de Takiri Folclor Latino, un grupo de danzas tradicionales latinoamericanas que creó para compartir y celebrar la cultura latina. “Es una forma de vivir y compartir nuestra cultura, de invitar a otros a celebrarla con nosotros y mantener vivas nuestras raíces,” dice. Pilar comenzó a bailar a los siete años, y desde que llegó a Carolina del Norte ha creado varios grupos de danza que llevan alegría, orgullo e identidad cultural a escenarios de toda la región.

Tanto en su liderazgo comunitario como en su trabajo cultural, Pilar busca tender puentes. “Ayudo a que otros entiendan cuán diversa es nuestra cultura latina, y también aprendo a valorar las demás culturas que forman el tejido de nuestra comunidad.” Su objetivo siempre es ayudar a las personas a alcanzar su máximo potencial.

Pilar valora profundamente su herencia cultural. Para ella, lo más importante es el sentido de familia, la diversidad, la alegría, el optimismo y la ética del trabajo. “Contribuimos en muchos oficios y profesiones,” señala. “Traemos dedicación, valores familiares, al

egría de vivir y un fuerte compromiso con lo que hacemos.”

A quienes visitan la exhibición de Lotería, Pilar les deja un mensaje muy suyo: “Soy una persona muy positiva. Me encanta estar con la gente y con mi familia.” Ya sea en el escenario o liderando una organización, Pilar lleva consigo su cultura, su pasión y su corazón en todo lo que hace.
