Profile: Mario Gonzalez

Mario González came to North Carolina from Puebla, Mexico, in search of a better life. He’s now lived in the state for 12 years, and what he loves most is the peace and beauty around him. “I love the green spaces, nature, the calmness, the tranquility—there’s no violence. That means everything.”

Music is at the heart of Mario’s life. As a traditional Mexican musician, his work is both deeply personal and cultural. “It’s something very beautiful—100% Mexican,” he says with pride. “When it’s time to play, it feels like I’m bringing a piece of Mexico with me.” For Mario, Mexican music is the best in the world, and being able to play it here in North Carolina is a powerful experience. “It’s emotional for me. And when we play at places like the Mexican Consulate, it’s emotional for others too. Seeing people connect to the music, seeing them moved—that means everything.”

Sharing music and culture is what drives him. “We share our traditions and customs—like the food, the music—from places like Michoacán. It’s about keeping those traditions alive and enriching this community with our culture.”

When asked what he values most about his heritage, Mario points to the depth and history of his roots. “I love our Hispanic identity, the legacy of the Mayans and other native peoples. Our food, our music—so many genres—it’s all part of who we are.”

Whether it’s through a heartfelt song or a shared dish, Mario sees culture as a bridge. “We bring joy, connection, and a little piece of home to those who’ve left Mexico behind.”

Mario González llegó a Carolina del Norte desde Puebla, México, en busca de una vida mejor. Lleva 12 años viviendo en el estado, y lo que más valora es la paz y la belleza que lo rodean. “Me encanta lo verde, la naturaleza, la tranquilidad, la calma… aquí no hay violencia. Eso lo es todo para mí.”

Como músico tradicional mexicano, su trabajo es tanto personal como cultural. “Es algo muy bonito, algo 100% mexicano,” dice con orgullo. “Cuando es hora de tocar el instrumento, siento que estoy trayendo un pedacito de México conmigo.” Para Mario, la mejor música del mundo está en México, y poder tocarla aquí en Carolina del Norte es una experiencia muy especial. “Es algo muy emocional para mí. Y cuando tocamos en lugares como el Consulado de México, también lo es para los demás. Ver que la gente se emociona al escucharnos… eso lo vale todo.”

Compartir la música y la cultura es lo que lo mueve. “Compartimos nuestras tradiciones y costumbres—como la comida, la música—de lugares como Michoacán. Se trata de mantener vivas esas raíces y enriquecer esta comunidad con nuestra cultura.”

Cuando se le pregunta qué es lo que más valora de su herencia, Mario señala la profundidad y la historia de sus raíces. “Amo nuestra identidad hispana, el legado de los mayas y de nuestros pueblos originarios. Nuestra comida, nuestra música—tantos géneros—todo eso es parte de lo que somos.”

Ya sea a través de una canción sentida o de un platillo compartido, Mario ve la cultura como un puente. “Traemos alegría, conexión y un pedacito de hogar para quienes han dejado México atrás.”
