Profile: Sandra Galvez-MacLachlan

Sandra Galvez MacLachlan was born in Los Angeles, California, and has lived in North Carolina for 14 years. Her family moved here drawn by many things: the warm weather, the kindness of the people, the diversity, the vibrant music scene, and new opportunities. Over time, the state has become home. “The feeling of community in our area is strong,” she says. “And I’ve appreciated the beautiful Southern hospitality I’ve encountered from so many people I’ve met through music.”

Sandra is the lead singer of 8-Track Minds, a '70s dance party band that has been performing across North Carolina for over a decade. Making music is not just a career for her—it’s a source of joy, connection, and love. “I play music with some very talented and seasoned musicians that are not just bandmates—we’re family,” she shares. It’s especially meaningful because her husband plays keyboard in the band, turning each performance into something they create and enjoy together.

Her journey as a singer began young, like many artists, in church. By age 16, she was performing professionally in nightclubs throughout Los Angeles while studying music in college. For more than 40 years, Sandra has built a successful career that’s taken her around the world, including recording backup vocals for several artists in the Spanish music industry. Music has been her passport to meaningful experiences and lifelong friendships.

What moves her most is the connection she creates with her audience. “The greatest feeling I get is when I have people of Hispanic or Latino background come up and tell me that seeing me on stage makes them feel as if there’s one of us up there—representing our people and bringing joy through song.”

Sandra is proud of her cultural roots and the values they represent. “I love the strong family bonds we have, the open, warm, welcoming feeling we give to everyone we meet.” She describes moments where strangers come together through music and, by the end of the night, are exchanging phone numbers and building community.

She believes Latino and Hispanic people bring something unique and powerful to every space they’re in. “To quote a famous vocalist, we bring the sazón to everything we do. When we commit ourselves to something, we give it our all and we try to do it with as much passion and joy as possible.”

Sandra is a first-generation American, the daughter of a Puerto Rican mother and a Mexican father. Both left their homes in their early 20s to build a life in the United States. “I want to thank them for the wonderful life they’ve given their children by encouraging us to do what makes us happy.” Her father had a simple phrase that continues to guide her today: ¿Por qué no? That question, full of possibility and curiosity, has led her around the world doing what she loves most—sharing music.

For Sandra, being part of the Lotería exhibit is a meaningful celebration of heritage and joy. “I’m very honored and humbled to be part of this exhibit, showcasing our culture in such a beautiful way.” Her story is a reminder that music, culture, and family are powerful forces for connection and belonging.

Lo que más la emociona es la conexión con el público. “La mayor satisfacción que siento es cuando personas de origen hispano o latino se me acercan y me dicen que al verme en el escenario sienten que hay alguien como ellos allí, representándonos y trayendo alegría a través del canto.”

Sandra se siente muy orgullosa de sus raíces culturales y de los valores que representan. “Amo los lazos fuertes que tenemos en la familia, ese sentimiento cálido, abierto y acogedor que le damos a todos los que conocemos.” Describe momentos en los que personas desconocidas se reúnen y, al final de la noche, ya están intercambiando números y formando comunidad.

Ella cree que la cultura latina aporta algo único y poderoso a cada espacio. “Como dijo una vocalista famosa, le ponemos sazón a todo lo que hacemos. Cuando nos comprometemos con algo, lo damos todo, y tratamos de hacerlo con la mayor pasión y alegría posible.”

Sandra es hija de inmigrantes: su madre puertorriqueña y su padre mexicano emigraron a Estados Unidos en sus veintes para construir una nueva vida. “Quiero agradecerles por la vida tan maravillosa que nos dieron al alentarnos a hacer lo que nos hace felices.” Su padre siempre decía una frase que ella guarda con cariño: ¿Por qué no? Esa simple pregunta, llena de posibilidades, la ha llevado a recorrer el mundo haciendo lo que más ama: compartir su música.

Para Sandra, ser parte de la exhibición de Lotería es un honor y una celebración de su cultura. “Me siento muy honrada y agradecida de ser parte de esta exhibición, mostrando nuestra cultura de una manera tan hermosa.” Su historia es un recordatorio de que la música, la cultura y la familia son fuerzas poderosas de conexión y pertenencia.
