Profile: Ashley Bojoy

Born in Durham, North Carolina, Ashley Bojoy Nolasco has called the state home for all of her 22 years. She treasures North Carolina’s natural beauty, from the mountains to the coast, and holds close the family memories made on yearly trips to Boone. “There’s this quiet little spot by the river near Boone where we hang out with family, grill out, go rafting, and swim in the calm parts of the water,” she recalls. For Ashley, North Carolina offers not just landscapes but a rich mix of cultures, foods, and communities that make the state feel full of possibility.

Ashley is an English Lead Teacher and bilingual preschool educator. In her classroom, she focuses on building strong foundations in both education and language while fostering belonging. “I aim to help my community feel seen, heard, and valued and to embrace their language, culture, and identity,” she explains. Through her work, Ashley creates safe and inclusive spaces where children and families feel supported and celebrated.

Her heritage is central to her identity and the values she carries into her work. On her father’s side, her family comes from an Indigenous Otomi community known for its language, traditional clothing, and artistry—Amate paper, beaded garments, and chaquira jewelry. On her mother’s side, her family’s roots are tied to the land through avocado cultivation and the tradition of making carnitas tacos. “What I value most about my cultural heritage is the language, the food, and the traditions on both sides of my family,” Ashley shares.

For Ashley, these roots also create special connections within her community. In her work with families, she often meets people with the same origins as her parents. Sharing stories, traditions, and experiences together not only strengthens bonds but also keeps culture alive. “We’re able to share stories, traditions, and experiences from our community together, which helps keep our culture alive and strengthens our bond,” she says.

Ashley es Maestra Principal de Inglés y educadora bilingüe de preescolar. En su salón de clases, se enfoca en construir bases sólidas tanto en la educación como en el idioma, fomentando a la vez un sentido de pertenencia. “Mi objetivo es que mi comunidad se sienta vista, escuchada y valorada, y que abrace su idioma, cultura e identidad,” explica. A través de su trabajo, Ashley crea espacios seguros e inclusivos donde los niños y sus familias se sienten apoyados y celebrados.

Su herencia es fundamental en su identidad y en los valores que lleva a su labor. Por parte de su padre, su familia proviene de una comunidad indígena otomí conocida por su idioma, su vestimenta tradicional y su arte: el papel amate, las prendas bordadas y las pulseras de chaquira. Por parte de su madre, sus raíces están ligadas a la tierra a través del cultivo de aguacates y la tradición de preparar tacos de carnitas. “Lo que más valoro de mi herencia cultural es el idioma, la comida y las tradiciones de ambos lados de mi familia,” comparte Ashley.

Para Ashley, estas raíces también generan conexiones especiales dentro de su comunidad. En su trabajo con familias, a menudo conoce a personas con los mismos orígenes que sus padres. Compartir historias, tradiciones y experiencias no solo fortalece los lazos, sino que también mantiene viva la cultura. “Podemos compartir historias, tradiciones y experiencias de nuestra comunidad, lo que ayuda a mantener nuestra cultura viva y fortalece nuestro vínculo,” dice.
