Profile: Erik Valera

Erik Valera was born in Chicago, raised in Miami and Los Angeles, and eventually found his way to North Carolina in 2007. He and his family made the move after he accepted a position at UNC, searching for a more affordable and stable place to raise their children. Leaving California wasn’t easy, but the promise of strong schools and a better quality of life inspired them to start a new chapter in North Carolina. Now, more than 15 years later, Erik feels at home in the state’s welcoming communities and the beauty of its changing seasons.

Professionally, Erik is a nonprofit consultant, but he’s also a painter—an artist in both practice and spirit. Since 1992, he has worked across public health, government, academia, and the nonprofit sector. No matter where his career has taken him, his mission has stayed the same: to advance equity, foster inclusion, and uplift communities. Erik is known for building connections wherever he goes, advocating not only for the Hispanic community but for all groups striving to be seen, heard, and valued.

Erik draws strength and joy from his cultural heritage. He treasures the people, traditions, food, music, and art that shape who he is. For him, these cultural threads aren’t just part of the past—they are a living force in his daily life and the work he does for others. He believes that Latine and immigrant communities are the essential backbone of North Carolina, shaping its future through hard work, creativity, and resilience.
