Profile: Miguel Rojas-Sotelo

Born in Bogotá, Colombia, Miguel Rojas Sotelo moved to North Carolina 18 years ago in search of new job opportunities. Since then, the state has become a deeply meaningful place for him, thanks to its tree-filled landscapes, the richness of its fauna—both animal and human—and a climate that nurtures his life and creativity.

With 25 years of experience, Miguel defines himself as an educator and creator who constantly learns alongside his students and subjects of study. His professional practice is rooted in unlearning in order to learn again, always with the conviction that education is a collective and transformative process. Through solidarity, support, and teaching, Miguel enriches the community by sharing the multiple stories and realities it experiences, as well as those told and created by diverse artists and thinkers.

From his cultural heritage, he deeply values language, family, generosity, friendship, tolerance, solidarity, love, attentive listening, sharing, and laughter. These principles not only guide his life but also shape the way he relates to those around him.

Miguel recognizes that the Latino and Hispanic community contributes in essential ways to North Carolina: through hard work in every space—from fields to laboratories—through the pursuit of social justice often absent in their countries of origin, through the strength of family, and through a spirit of service and solidarity. For him, these values make North Carolina a better place to live, grow, and put down roots.

What Miguel most wants visitors to the Lotería exhibit to know is this: he is here to serve, with humility and commitment, as an extension of his vocation to accompany and strengthen the community.
