Profile: Anaís Roque

Born in New York, Anaís Delilah Roque moved to North Carolina just a year ago for new professional opportunities. In her short time here, she has come to deeply appreciate the warmth of the people, the diversity of food and activities, and the welcoming climate that makes the state feel like home. “I appreciate how kind people are here, the diversity of food, the activities to do, and even the weather,” she shares.

Anaís is a university professor who teaches environmental topics with a strong social lens. Over the past three years, she has trained students to work with disadvantaged communities and to use science as a tool for social change. “As a professor, I train students in how to work with underserved communities and to use science as a tool for social change,” she explains. Her teaching bridges the gap between research and action, empowering the next generation to engage thoughtfully and collaboratively in building more just and sustainable futures.

As a proud Puerto Rican, Anaís treasures her community’s resilience and creativity: “We have the ability to transform difficult moments into moments of joy. We are a culture rich in music, dance, and community action.” These values travel with her wherever she goes, shaping her approach to education and community engagement in North Carolina.

Anaís also highlights the wide-ranging contributions of Latinx and Hispanx communities in the United States. “In the U.S., there are more than 60 million Latinxs/Hispanxs—from arts, education, sports, food, politics, and science, we contribute to the very fabric of this country,” she says. She notes that Puerto Ricans, in particular, have influential figures such as Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor and artist Benito Martínez (Bad Bunny), reflecting the depth of their impact on American culture.

What Anaís most wants visitors to the Lotería exhibit to know is this: “My passion is to serve. Through academia, I seek to create spaces of collaboration and action on environmental issues to support communities in responding to environmental challenges.”

Anaís es profesora universitaria que enseña temas ambientales con un fuerte enfoque social. Como puertorriqueña orgullosa, Anaís valora la resiliencia y creatividad de su comunidad: “Tenemos la habilidad de transformar momentos difíciles en momentos de alegría. Somos una cultura rica en música, baile y acción comunitaria.” Estos valores viajan con ella a cualquier lugar al que va, moldeando su forma de enseñar y de relacionarse con la comunidad en Carolina del Norte.

Anaís también enfatiza las amplias contribuciones de las comunidades Latinxs/hispanxs en Estados Unidos. “En Estados Unidos hay más de 60 millones de latinxs/hispanxs—desde las artes, la educación, los deportes, la comida, la política y la ciencia, contribuimos al tejido mismo de este país,” dice. Destaca que, en particular, los puertorriqueños han tenido figuras influyentes como la jueza de la Corte Suprema Sonia Sotomayor y el artista Benito Martínez (Bad Bunny), reflejando la profundidad de su impacto en la cultura estadounidense.
