Profile: Cecilia Polanco

Born in Los Angeles, California, and raised in Durham, North Carolina, since before their first birthday, Cecilia Polanco has deep roots in both their Salvadoran heritage and their Southern upbringing. Their family migrated to North Carolina during a time of civil unrest and violence in El Salvador, joining relatives who had already been living in the state for over a decade. For Cecilia, North Carolina is not just where they grew up. It’s where they watched community, culture, and opportunity grow. They love witnessing the rise of Latine and immigrant communities, especially in Durham, where small businesses are thriving and people are finding creative ways to share their culture and make a living. From the mountains to the coast, North Carolina’s diverse geography also reminds them of the natural beauty of El Salvador.

Cecilia is a community organizer, activist, and student dedicated to advancing justice and equity. Their work bridges local organizing and global advocacy, but more than a job, it’s a calling and a way of life. No matter what space they're in, Cecilia is always thinking about how to bring access, opportunity, and knowledge back to her community, especially its youth. They see themselves as a connector and catalyst. “When I open a door, I hold it open. I want others to feel welcome. I want to follow the ideas and leadership of our youth.” They see their work as part of a larger effort to ensure their community not only survives but thrives.

Cecilia’s Salvadoran roots are central to who they are, especially the culture of food, music, and dancing.  For them, food is a bridge between cultures, and dancing is a source of energy and joy. They believe the Latine community brings innovation, resilience, and faith to North Carolina, expanding what it means to belong here. “We’re used to the system failing us, so we find ways to organize, mobilize, and plant new things. We grow anyway, even if it’s just a pot of herbs in the kitchen. Nature is always with us.”

Cecilia also emphasizes that their story is not just one of strength, but of vulnerability and care. They are open about their experiences with mental illness and disability, challenging assumptions that people may make about them. “People see me and think I’ve got it all together, but I’ve had to work through a lot, and I’ve needed help to do what I do.” They find power in being honest and human, reminding others that success is rarely solitary. It’s rooted in community, healing, and staying true to oneself.

Las raíces salvadoreñas de Cecilia son centrales en su identidad, especialmente la cultura de la comida, la música y el baile. “¡Pupusas y baile!”, dice riendo. Para elle, la comida es un puente entre culturas, y el baile es una fuente de energía y alegría. Cree que la comunidad latina aporta innovación, resiliencia y fe a Carolina del Norte, ampliando lo que significa pertenecer aquí. “Estamos acostumbralxs a que el sistema nos falle, así que buscamos maneras de organizarnos, movilizarnos y plantar cosas nuevas. Crecemos de todos modos, aunque sea una maceta de hierbas en la cocina. La naturaleza siempre está con nosotrxs.”

Cecilia también enfatiza que su historia no es solo de fortaleza, sino también de vulnerabilidad y cuidado. Habla abiertamente sobre sus experiencias con enfermedades mentales y discapacidad, desafiando las suposiciones que la gente pueda tener sobre elle. “La gente me ve y piensa que lo tengo todo resuelto, pero he tenido que trabajar mucho en mí misme, y he necesitado ayuda para hacer lo que hago.” Encuentra poder en ser honeste y humane, recordando a les demás que el éxito rara vez es solitario.
